Public Lecture of Prof. Thomas D. Grant

On May, 26 in the conference-hall of the International Relations Faculty of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv had taken place a Public Lecture of the Professor of Law of Cambridge University Thomas D. GRANT devoted to the “The terriotrial settlement, its challenfes and what’s stake for international law”. The event was jointly organized by the European Law Department of Lviv University together with Lviv Centre for International Law and Human Rights within the visit of Professor Grant to Ukraine.
The event was opened by the short speeches of Volodymyr Lysyk, the director of Lviv Centre for International Law and Human Rights and Associate Professor of tру European Law Department
Oksana Holovko-Havrysheva. They both had pointed out the importance of the subject of lecture and the need for a communication of the lecturers of Lviv University with the representatives of the leading world schools.
During his lecture, Professor Grant had analyzed the existing status-quo with the territorial disputes in the world and has outlined that the current problems faced by Ukraine are not exceptional. He analyzed the historical development of the legal regulation of the relations concerning territory in the contemporary international law. In his opinion in the case of absence of this institute, the armed conflicts would become an ordinariness for modern international relations.
It should be also noted that this event had become a second one with the participation of the well-known international lawyer in the walls of Lviv University, a partner of which is Lviv Centre for International Law and Human Rights. On April, 30 Philippe Sands, Professor of the University College of London had given a Public Lecure at the Mirror Hall of the Lviv University on “Crimea and International Law”.

Public lecture of Prof. Philippe Sands was held in Lviv

On April,  30 at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv was held a Public Lecture of the professor of University College of London Philippe Sands devoted to the “Crimea and International Law. Lecture was jointly organized by the Lviv Centre for International Law and Human Rights and the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in Cooperation with the Lviv Branch of the Ukrainian Bar Association and TV Channel 24.

During his lecture, Prof. Sands had considered the possible ways of the resolving of Crimean dispute in case of its solution within the international dispute resolution procedure. In particular, as a potential ways of the protection of the interests of Ukraine he had outlined the claiming to the International Tribunal on the Law of Sea with the aim to get a decision on sovereignty over the sea territories in the Black Sea and the exclusive economic zone, to the European Court of Human Rights concerning the situation around Crimea and to the international organs which are settling disputes concerning the protection of property rights of the Ukrainian and foreign investors, whose rights are violated within the 2014-2015 nationalization and expropriation in Crimea.
According to professor Sands the situation around Crimea has sharpened the question of the effectiveness of international law. Particularly some representatives of the British power had changed their position on the participation of the UK in the European Convention on Human Rights and jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights seeing it as a potential instrument to protect their own interests in the future. Also the researcher stated that it is possible z repetition of similar or similar situations in the future.

At the end Prof. Sands answered to the question of the students and other attendees.

It should be separately noted that the public lecture was attended by a number of the Ukrainian and foreign international lawyers, in particular prof. William Shabas, dean of the Law School of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv Andriy Boyko, former Judge of the European Court of Human Rights Volodymyr Butkevych, Head of the Law of European Union of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv Mykhailo Mykievych, outstanding Ukrainian theorist of law prof. Petro Rabinovych, the representative of the European Court of Human Rights Pavlo Poushkar and other.

It was a fifth visit of the prof. Sands to Lviv, during all of which he is conducting such events.

In the nearest time it is expected the publishing of the prof. Sands book on the contribution of Lviv to the development of the contemporary international law.
